The course is designed both as a stand-alone course in fundamentals of investment management (financial economics) theory and policy, and a foundation for further study of advanced investment management. Topics considered may include: the investment environment (drawing on investments processes, types and plans); securities markets and transactions; investment information and securities transaction; return and risks (drawing on how to measuring returns); modern portfolio concepts; common stocks and stock valuation (drawing on different stock valuation models); issues related with market efficiency and behavioural finance; fixed-income securities (such as bonds and bond valuation and debt securities); portfolio management (drawing on mutual funds and exchange-traded funds and how to manage own portfolio); and finally derivative securities (drawing on put and call options as well as futures markets and securities).

On successful completion of the course, students should be able to

(1) Analyse the types and theoretical concepts of and processes involved in investment management.
(2) Explain portfolio concepts and the process of asset allocation and portfolio construction.

(3) Understand investment planning, risks and decision-making

(4) Analyse investment theories – diversification, portfolio theory, capital-asset pricing model and efficient market hypothesis

(5) Assess portfolio management styles.
(6) Analyse the characteristics and relative benefits of the various asset classes.
(7) Understand the returns and risks of securities
(8) Explain diversified issues related with market efficiency and behavioural finance
(9) Analyze common stocks and stock valuation

(10) Learn investment in practice – methods employed by fund managers
