Saving for a Dry Day: Coal, Dams, and the Energy Transition (Co-author: Jorge Tamayo (Harvard University))
IO is the analysis of market imperfections and imperfectly competitive markets – meaning most if not all real-world markets. Whether you want to understand how well a market works from the point of consumers, firms, employees or the taxpayer (government), IO tools are indispensable for your analysis. IO blends economic theory, knowledge of institutions and empirical methods to address real world questions that are relevant for business and policy.
If you have any questions or you would like be added to the IO group's email list, please contact Tanja Saxell (tanja.saxell@vatt.fi).
Examples of questions that economists specializing in Industrial Organization (IO) analyze include but are not limited to the following: What does market power mean, how is it created, and how is it sustained? What does strategic interaction between firms mean? How many cartels are there, and how harmful are they? How do market power and strategic interaction between firms affect market outcomes?
These seminars/workshops offer our PhD students an opportunity to present their preliminary research ideas as well as ongoing research projects.
If you are a PhD student at GSE and would like to present in the seminar/workshop, please contact Tanja Saxell (tanja.saxell@vatt.fi), Eero Nurmi (eero.nurmi@aalto.fi) or Amin Mohazab (amin.mohazabrahimzadeh@aalto.fi) who are the organizers of these seminars or Iivo Vehviläinen (iivo.vehvilainen@vatt.fi) who is the organizer of the workshops. Kindly note that it is a good practice to always agree with your supervisor about the possible presentation & its topic before you volunteer to present.
We organize approximately once a month an IO field seminar, with speakers coming typically from abroad. For more information, kindly contact Geert van Moer and Jiekai Zhang (firstname.lastename@hanken.fi).
We organize approximately once a month an IO reading group (in the form of a lunch seminar). Kindly contact Markku Siikanen (markku.siikanen@vatt.fi) if you would like to participate in the reading group.
