Gender differences in performance under pressure: An analysis of Mixed Martial Arts
Abstract:
This paper examines the impact of competitive stress on performance in mixed martial arts, using data from the Ultimate Fighting Championship spanning from 2010 to 2021. The study aims to understand how stress affects athletes, particularly in high-stakes scenarios, and to identify differences between male and female responses. By analyzing fight outcomes and performance metrics, the findings reveal that fighters tend to perform better after a series of losses, suggesting improved performance under pressure. This effect is more pronounced in women than in men. Additionally, the research explores psychological and physiological factors contributing to these differences. The study concludes that competitive stress significantly influences athlete performance, with notable gender differences in response. This research contributes to the understanding of pressure-induced performance, highlighting a stronger effect in women, which is a novel discovery. This insight could inform coaches about training and preparation strategies for mixed martial artists, enhancing performance outcomes under stress.
