On August 14th, M.Sc. (Econ.) Eero Sillasto will defend his doctoral thesis “Essays on Resource Exploitation under Fixed Costs”. Sillasto studies implementation of fixed costs for activities with a finite amount of production. The results of his thesis are applicable, for instance, to the policies for exploiting the natural resources.
Eero Sillasto’s work contributes to the literature on resource economics by developing the methodology to analyze resource exploitation of deposits with a stable implementation of fixed costs. With this implementation Sillasto derives characteristics for the efficient and oligopolistic solutions that were out of reach with the costs structures used in the previous literature. His dissertation shows and analyzes the problems with the price-taking competition that does not exists in general, and with the entry that is distorted.
After his defence, Sillasto will continue his work as a researcher at Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luonnonvarakeskus).
